Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have questions about any aspects of floor sanding and finishing in North London N10? You almost certainly do, so here we’ve brought together some of the more recurrent of these based on feedback from customers who have been through just the same experience as you’re considering. Should you have a query that isn’t covered, drop us an email and we’ll be delighted to help.

CAN I STAIN MY FLOOR MYSELF?

If you’re new to this type of DIY we would not recommend that you try it. We’ve stained literally thousands of wooden floors and bring a wealth of expertise to the job. A badly stained floor is not a pretty sight. Stained properly it should have a rich and even depth of colour to it. It is all too easy to give it a patchy and dull appearance by not staining it correctly. Be sure to take a look at our Gallery and at our customer testimonials to see that we deliver the real goods when it comes to sanding and staining floors in North London N17.

MY BOARDS ARE A MESS - SHOULD I JUST LAY DOWN A NEW WOODEN FLOOR ?

When you pull back the fitted carpet from any wooden floor it usually looks a disappointing mess. The sanding process strips away dirt and paint, and damaged floorboards can always be replaced or repaired. Most residential properties with the exception of brand new ones have wooden floors and when these get a good sanding they look fantastic. Incidentally, if you own a flat you should check your lease before doing any sanding.

ARE HARD FLOORS BETTER FOR ASTHMA SUFFERERS ?

The short answer is ‘yes’. Dust mites that cause this and other allergies live in soft furnishing and carpets. You can easily clean bare floorboards and any rugs you lay on top of them can be thoroughly washed and dried to kill the dust mites.

HOW LONG CAN I EXPECT MY NEW WOODEN FLOORS TO LAST ?

The longevity of any floor is largely down to how well it is maintained and how much traffic it experiences. A good wooden floor that is subjected to average traffic and is kept in a good state of repair should last for at least a decade and usually much longer. Our free cleaning kit, given to you at the end of a sanding and finishing job, will get you off to the ideal start and ensure that you enjoy your new wood floor for many years to come.

WHEN SHOULD WE DECORATE?

We would recommend doing any decorating before we arrive. Your finished floor can do without any splashed paint falling on it, and our North London sanding N8 and finishing team will work without creating any mess at all thanks to our state-of-the-art, dust-free sanding equipment. Most decorators, if you’re getting them in, would much prefer the freedom to make some amount of mess, and this is best done before the new floor is in place.

HOW LONG WILL YOU TAKE TO DO THE WHOLE JOB?

A room of average size such as a bedroom or lounge should take no longer than a day to sand down properly and then an additional day to apply the finish of varnish, oil or wax. Sanding often needs to be done two or even three times, depending on the floor’s condition, and there are also preliminary repairs such as gap filling and replacing damaged floorboards to be done before sanding can start.

You’ll be made fully aware of the time frame involved at the outset and we won’t be disrupting your household or business routine for an unexpected period. Incidentally, after our team has packed up and gone you’ll have to leave the floor to settle and cure for a while.

WHAT IF I'M SENSITIVE TO SOME INDUSTRIAL CHEMICALS?

All of our stains, varnishes, waxes and seals are eco-friendly and even replacement boards are wherever possible sourced from sustainable origins. Toxic poisoning is not going to be an issue here!

WILL THIS BE A BIG UPHEAVAL?

Whether you’re a commercial or domestic customer, upheaval is kept to the minimum. We use the latest dust-free equipment, work fast and you’ll hardly know we’d been there except for the splendid new floor we leave you with.
